Cough Syrup Case Updates: In Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, a case of children's deaths has come to light due to consuming cough syrup. It is feared that the accident occurred due to poisonous chemicals. After the death of two more children on Saturday, the death toll has increased to 11. Preliminary investigation has found that a dangerous chemical element was found in the cough syrup, causing the kidney failure.
The state government has immediately banned the sale of syrup by taking action. Also, the doctor who prescribed this medicine has been arrested. Pediatrician Dr. Praveen Soni, who lives in Parasia, Chhindwara, has been arrested by the police. He advised children suffering from cold and fever to take "Coldrif Cuff Syrup." After the consumption of the syrup, many children fell seriously ill and died.
The Madhya Pradesh government received a report from the Tamil Nadu Drug Control Department that 48.6 percent of the diethylene glycol (DEG) has been found in "Coldrif Cuff Syrup." This is the same chemical that is usually used in antifreeze and brake fluids.Swallowing it can cause kidney failure and death.
The state government has directed strict action against Srishan Pharmaceutical Company of Tamil Nadu, which manufactures this syrup. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered all drug inspectors to seize the existing stock of the syrup, stop its sale, and send samples for testing.
Expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said that the deaths of children in Chhindwara due to cold syrup are extremely painful. He announced a compensation of ₹4 lakh to the families of the deceased children. The government also stated that the state government will bear the entire cost of treatment for the sick children.
Following the deaths in Chhindwara and Rajasthan, investigations into cough syrup have begun in other states as well. The central government has started a risk-based inspection of drug construction units in six states. Inspection especially focuses on companies making cough syrup, fever, and antibiotics.
The highest number of cases of this phenomenon has been reported in Chhindwara district. Most of the children who died in late August had kidney failure. Initially, they had colds and mild fevers, for which they were given cough syrup. After a few days, their condition deteriorated, and they eventually died.
